the dalgona coffee challenge

If you’ve been on social media at all in the last two few weeks (and let's face it—we've all been on it A LOT), you’ve probably seen all kinds of beautiful photos of decadent-looking whipped coffee—aka Dalgona Coffee. It started as a “bored at home” trend in South Korea, but once it hit Instagram and TikTok, it quickly became an Internet sensation. Just check out the hashtag #dalgonacoffee.  It's really exploded!

Obviously, I had to try to make it. The first few times flopped—I couldn’t get the whipped texture right. But after a few tries, I finally got the results I was looking for. It’s super fun and easy to make, and it’s super photogenic! And yes, it tastes as good as it looks.

This delicious, smooth, sweet coffee treat was a nice little break from the mundaneness of our #stayhome.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon instant coffee
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons hot water
milk, to serve
ice, to serve

Directions

Pour hot water into a small mixing bowl.  Make sure you use hot water or the coffee won't dissolve and whip well. Add instant coffee and mix lightly to dissolve (we used Nescafé Colombian, but any should work). Begin whipping the coffee; slowly add sugar as you whip. We used a handheld whipper, but a hand mixer works well, too. Whip until texture is light and fluffy, but stiff enough to hold its form. Spoon or pour over iced milk and stir.

With such a simple recipe, it’s easy to put your own spin on this fun (and beautiful) drink! Replace the dairy with your favorite milk substitute (Will loves Califia Farms coconut almond milk) or indulge with a little chocolate or caramel drizzle on top. Enjoy!
